The view of an altered sky and atmosphere above Portland, Oregon, USA

by dtlange

As the Arctic warms under a broken jet stream I took a series of photos in early March of the sky and atmosphere above the Pacific Northwest. The contrails from these high altitude planes are mostly south to north from airliners flying the polar route.

Exhaust trails from these commercial airliners combine to create a dense mush of artificial cloud cover — which also effects the climate. These are juxtaposed these with a very weak jet stream and a lower and upper atmosphere full of moisture and particulate pollution.

I have to wonder about the wisdom of creating an artificial cloud cover over an extremely vulnerable sea and land mass that is already warming from rampant fossil fuel pollution.
